Over the last 10 or more years I have both looked after my elderly parents and worked in an IT support company, where I helped the majority of the older clients. It appeared they found my explanations easier to follow and clearer than the other staff!
One of my great joys in life is helping others solve problems, so it seems like a natural progression to focus on helping our senior citizens understand technology that the “kids” fine easy.
I started out my profession career as a computer programmer in the early 80s, then moved to the TV & Music industries for around 10 years, before I ended up finding myself at the IT manager of a huge medic conference that my father, an orthopaedic surgeon, was president of. This was the early days of the internet and web and I set up a website with a method for doctors to register online and submit abstracts for their presentations. To my knowledge, this was the first medical meeting in the world to do this! Which is a long winded way of saying I ended up back in IT in the mid 90s and have stayed there.
I now live on the Central Coast with my elderly mother, whom I care for. The last few years have been challenging due to my father’s declining health. This has increased my interest in helping older people with the challenges of modern day life and the hurdles technology can throw their way.
So, with all this diverse experience, I’ve ended up somewhat of a general practitioner of IT/technology/computers/gadgets…whatever you wish to call it. Hence, the “IT GP”
Looking forward to helping you!
Cheers,
Simon
